Cosmoquila

clock May 30, 2006 21:35 by author philip
Made a Cosmoquila tonight. Far superior to the ordinary Cosmo or it's bastard child the Brangelina. Cosmoquila: 2 oz Gold Tequila, 1 oz Cointreau, 1/2 oz Lime Juice and 1/2 oz Cranberry. Although I have a confession. The one I made tonight was with cheap Jose Cuervo Especial, Triple Sec, Bottled Lime Juice and with day old 'Microsoft' Cranberry Juice. Even suffering from cheap ingredients syndrome it was actually very nice. I'll have to pull out the fresh juices, top shelf tequila and Cointreau to test it out properly.

The Da Vinci Code

clock May 29, 2006 17:15 by author philip

So I saw the Da Vinci Code today and honestly I can't see what all the fuss is about. The movie is constantly apologetic towards Christianity and even toward Opus Dei. It's like saying that the movie Anti Trust hurt the sales of Microsoft software. Everyone who saw it knew that it was fiction inspired by a 'urban myth' perception of Microsoft which most people agree is untrue.

As movies go it's nice - with some clever special effects in the 'historical flashpoints' and when visually explaining the symbology. From a cinematic standpoint it's not a bad film. I think the critical backlash is a little cruel in this case. Ron Howard & Co did a good job translating a story so well suited for the written form into a nicely flowing film.

Boston: Mother Anna's

clock May 29, 2006 17:04 by author philip
On the Saturday night in Boston (after the Oak Room) we checked out a 'family style' Italian restaurant. Reviews had led me to Mother Anna's and I made a reservation long in advance: which was prudent since the place was literally packed. Service, food and atmosphere all sucked. It was dodgy. To compound matters I was throwing up my seafood pasta the next morning on the plane to DC (a charming experience). This time the internet lied to me: making a Zagat subscription very attractive.

Boston: Oak Bar at the Fairmont

clock May 29, 2006 17:01 by author philip
Before dinner one night we checked out the Oak Bar at the Fairmont Hotel. The internet had led me to believe that this was the place in Boston for cocktails in a traditional settings. This time the internet was not wrong. Service was a little slow but in their defense the place was packed. The cocktails were pricey but also huge: coming in a small caraf over ice. Good value when the total volume of grog was calculated. The martini I had was one of the best I've ever tasted. Well worth it.

Boston: Sonsie

clock May 29, 2006 16:57 by author philip
Our lunch choice in Boston was Sonsie which was a pleasing oasis from the torrential rain that day. The style, service and menu is that of a traditional Parisan cafe (unfortunately the coffee also decided to be of that banal french style). Well worth it. High marks for service, food and style.

Boston: 33

clock May 29, 2006 16:55 by author philip
While in Boston a few weeks back we check out 33. Reviews led me to believe this was a happening place. For ambience and food quality they scored high marks in my book. Service (both at the bar before dinner and while seated) was pretty much dogshit. I gave a poor tip and left with a clean conscience. However I was impressed enough with the food that I probably would go back.

Caipirinha

clock May 28, 2006 23:20 by author philip

I introduced Alex and Kate to the humble Caipirinha tonight. For their reference:

Cut one lime into 8 wedges and place in the bottom of an old fashioned (ie. sturdy) glass. Add 2 teaspoons of sugar and then crush the sugar and limes with a muddler (a small wooden club). Now add ice cubes and pour in the Cachaca. Drink through a straw. Normally I would call a man a pussy for using a straw but the Caipirinha is an exception since you need to drink the Cachaca through the lime mixture at the bottom.

Marketecture: A technical architecture that exists purely for marketing purposes. Eg: "You don't have anything - you've just got pictures.".

Vista

clock May 25, 2006 17:10 by author philip
Just took my primary desktop to Vista today. Everything is running OK on build 5381 Professional. The laptops will stay on XPSP2 as they are primarily used for demos and I like to keep them 'beta free'.

Shadowrun Followup

clock May 24, 2006 19:01 by author philip

UPDATE: Lunch has taken place please read game review!!

I've been invited to lunch with the Shadowrun team to have a deep dive on the new Microsoft Shadowrun. I had some cruel things to say about their approach to the setting... so I might not get out alive (I am hoping to bring a witness friend).

I'll also be very interested in their cross platform approach as I believe it will run on both Vista and Xbox360 with a shared gamespace. Maybe while I'm there I can get FASA to get into some CRM dogfood :)

Mass Deletion of CRM Records

clock May 22, 2006 09:02 by author philip

I often get asked about quick ways to purge CRM data. Going directly to the database far to risky when it comes to deletion: since CRM supports an array of advanced deletion cascade rules which you might miss.

Here is a little script I wrote to purge some records from one of my CRM installations. Firstly I do a normal retrieve (see the standard SDK sample). Then using the RetrieveMultipleResponse result (retrieved) I just loop through it and execute the delete method of the service.

foreach (contact contact in retrieved.BusinessEntityCollection.BusinessEntities)

{

service.Delete("contact", contact.contactid.Value);

Console.WriteLine(contact.contactid.Value.ToString());

}

Microsoft CRM Vertical Solution: Recruitment Management

clock May 18, 2006 18:46 by author philip

Today I built a vertical solution for Microsoft CRM 3.0: Candidate Recruitment Management. It took me about 90 minutes and is a 'no-code' solution. Over the next week I'll be tweaking it, adding some workflows and an external web site sample for posting resumes and publishing job descriptions.

I'm building it for a presentation for an internal team - but it is easily something I can share externally so stay tuned for more details. Unlike many of the other CRM demos out there this one is pretty much 'raw' CRM with a bit of ASP.NET 2.0 for the external site (to showcase the CRM web services).

The Microsoft Townhall

clock May 18, 2006 18:43 by author philip

I won't bore all the non-microserfs with too much detail regarding the Microsoft Town Hall meeting today. Let first just say: wow. They did it. The curve is dead, high performers will get decent rewards and more benefits! I'm in favour of the reforms and I hope we will see more positive changes in the years to come. Forget what you've heard about Google: Microsoft is the best place on earth to work.

As a side note: a photo of the CRM team was used as the 'stock background' for the meeting.

Matt Cutts' Rules of Thumb

clock May 18, 2006 18:39 by author philip
Matt Cutts (Google's top blogger) has posted a collection of 'rules of thumb' over on his blog. The one I will be trying to adopt is: "When you’re in a conversation about something that you want, and you’ve gotten approval: stop talking and leave."
