Zune CRM Sync App

clock December 26, 2006 19:48 by author philip

UPDATE: BETA TESTING HAS CLOSED

I have a beta of my Zune CRM syncing app ready. Volunteers who are interested in beta testing should email me.

The current version creates a root sync folder (based on the datetime of the sync) and then two sub folders (Accounts and Contacts). The one jpg for each account and contact is placed in the appropriate folder. The jpgs are 320x240 images for optimimum display on the Zune's screen. Each jpg is named after the account or contact allowing you to use the Zune's alphanumber scrolling feature to quickly find records. I haven't much work on improving the font brush or background graphics (that is the next step).

Review: Korby's Holdiday Party

clock December 26, 2006 13:09 by author philip

Update: Korby has posted his retrospective on his party.

Last Friday my wife and I were invited toKorby's Holiday Party. Instead of my standard (or substandard) review of such things I thought I would deconstruct Korby's pre-party blog post using post-party information/opinion.

My Requirements: meal must be festive, semi-formal, multi-course, serve 14-16 people, and be as kosher as possible...if possible.

There were nine people - which was good number. 14-16 might have been a little claustrophic especially considering we doing 'formal seating'. I personally freak out when we host 6 people for table service. Kosher. mmm. Those bacon wrapped BBQ'd prawns, although delicious, may not have met those requirements.

Pre-Dinner Cocktails
Unknown. I'll be asking my friends
Phil and Alex: both 'maestros of mix' to prepare and serve up "festive" cocktails. Ho ho ho.

I made my interpretation of James Bond's Vesper (3 parts Cascadia Gin from Oregon, 1 part Smirnoff Lemon Vodka, 1/2 part Lillet and a twist of lemon). Alex made some awesome martinis (he is favoring Absolute Vodka, Cinzano Vermouth and brutal amounts of Olive Brine).

Starters (pupus)
Cambazola,Mirabo, and plain brie on rosemary wafers with tropical fruit compote and/or fireweed honey. Plain croutons (sliced baguette fried golden brown with butter and light herbs and spices), a selection of harder cheeses, and kalamata olive tapanade, on the side.
Pickle Tray: whole garlic cloves, jalepeno stuffed green olives, artichoke hearts, and pickled herring (a Svenska touch in honor of my heritage).
Fruit Tray: fresh pineapple and a pomegranate garnished with fresh mint (yes, that's it)
Bacon-wrapped jumbo prawns with a wedge of braised pineapple, because I figure we may well concentrate all that is unkosher in one side dish.
Beverages: Hot, spiced apple cider AND/OR Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Meritages, and other light reds from California's Napa Valley and Central Coast, Oregon's Willamette Valley, and Walla Walla, Washington. Chef juice.

Of the cheese the Walnuss (Walnut) Cambanzola (or was it Gorganzola) from Bavaria was quite good. Now the 'plain croutons' were a little too garlicly for my taste (something I didn't think was possible). I am very strict when it comes to my cheese accompaniments: they should be as tasteless as possible - so as not to distract from the cheese. The tapanade was to die for BTW (and I mean that in a good way).

Soup
Roasted Carrot Soup--4oz, topped with a tablespoon-sized dollop of whole sour cream and a julienned spear of organic carrot, carmelized in clarified butter, with brown sugar, shallots, garlic, and sherry to al dente perfection (hopefully). Garnish, a sprig of fresh tarragon.
Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato Bisque, upon request. Same portion size and toppings as the carrot soup. Garnish: fresh, minced chives.

A small change in the menu here (tomato not carrot soup). Moving to the slightly sweeter tomato was a good choice here. The soup was cookly expertly and plated with style.

Beverages: Sparkling Water with a few drops of Pomegranate juice and AND/OR the remains of the reds, the cocktail dregs, or apple cider.

I avoided the Pomegranate juice. It looked a little scary. At this point I moved on to Sauvignon Blanc.

Salad
Mixed Organic Greens topped with: crumbled gorgonzola, dried currants OR pomegranate seeds, and chopped walnuts. Accompanied by three, equally sized wedges of avocado, unpeeled mandarin orange, and Washington State pear.
Dressing: approximately two parts
raspberry dessert wine (framboise), one part balsamic vinegar, one part good old tap water, Salat-Kroenung Italienische to taste (Good Seasons Italian Dressing mix will do fine, in a pinch) and three-four parts walnut oil, the most important ingredient.
Beverage: Ice water AND/OR a blend of TBD juices and water, probably inclusive of grapefruit, lime, and pomegranate (Thanks be to
Trader Joe. You da man!)

Salad was a good palate cleanser (as the Sea Bass was very much on my mind). Naturally I avoided the avocado (given that it makes puke). Ellie would like to point out that there were not three wedges: but one!

Main Course
6 oz Chilean Sea Bass*: steamed, supple, and simple
Substitute, upon request, of oven-roasted rosemary chicken breast (brined 2 hours), broiled filet mignon (rubbed with fresh minced garlic, coarse sea salt, and freshly ground pepper), broiled portabella mushroom, or eggplant korby-aise.
Accompaniments:
Sweet|Crunchy|Orange|Green|Vegetable: roasted, carmelized carrots and zucchini spears along with zucchini spears...and roasted red pepper if'n I'm inspired. (3-4oz)
Crispy|Chewy|Salty|Yellow|Starch: platanos fritos(4-5, 1oz aka tostones)
Sour|Red: blaukraut (2-3 oz)
Sweet|Spicy|Brown: Chutney, made with love by my mom. (.5 ounce, served atop fish)
Garnish: fresh, minced chives and fresh parsley sprigs
Beverages:
2004 Silverado Cabernet Sauvingnon yumyumyum

I was super impressed by the Sea Bass and the accompanied Sauvignon Blanc (not Cab Sav as mentioned) was an excellent match.

In summary Korby clearly excelled in the dinner party cooking stakes.

Zune Library Corruption

clock December 24, 2006 12:17 by author philip
Whilst testing my ZuneCrm app I somehow managed to corrupt my Zune Library (on the desktop machine not the Zune). Although a couple of times I managed to make the Zune go a little nuts (extreme slowdowns - but no overt 'crash'). My app is relatively simply: I'm converting business data (from Microsoft CRM) into 320x240 jpgs. Currently the app creates a folder for each Account and then places a jpg for the Account profile and then a jpg for each Contact associated to the Account. I decided to hook it up to our 'dogfood' instance (which has a hearty number of customers - because we are a heartily successful business!) to see what 'real world' results would look like. It turns out (I think) that the Zune does not like enormous numbers of folders (for pictures at least). It doesn't mind thousands of pictures: it does 'seem' to mind thousands of folders. So now with a corrupted library my machine has to resync everything again with the Zune. It turns out that the 'primary partnership' is not with a computer but with a library. In addition to resyncing it is also converting all the music, pictures and videos again. Not happy, Jan!. In a few hours I'll be able to listen to music again. During this time I'll have to rethink the storage strategy for the Accounts, Contacts data. Fleshing out some more usage scenarios is probably what the problem needs.

Naturally this is all suposition. I am not a member of the Zune team and my knowledge of the Zune is limited that which is in the public domain. Don't email me about writing apps for the Zune: I don't know anything special.

BTW: I'll have a public beta of the sync app posted in the next couple of days. Unless my next round of books keep me occupied.

Holidays!

clock December 22, 2006 11:52 by author philip

Have I become a de facto Zune salesguy?. I must say I'm a little jealous of the Sonoma gang for getting a Zune for the holidays. Maybe I should publish my Zune CRM 'app' (although it does need a little work).

Tonight I'm off to Korby's cocktail party. I'm tasked with cocktails: but I have not decided what to make yet. Maybe the Vesper - since James Bond is so 'hot right now'. I make my Vesper using Cascadia Gin, Lemon Vodka and Lillet. It's a little more 'fruity' than the average one but still a killer drink.

According to hrweb I'm not working Monday/Tuesday next week (seriously I can't work out all the strange American public holidays). Available on personal email (Sonoma people can email me if they have Zune 'issues' as I now feel personally responsible). Make sure you get the 1.2 update before panicking!!

Zune 1.2 Firmware Update

clock December 19, 2006 10:41 by author philip

The Zune 1.2 Firmware Update is now available. For some reason my Zune did not 'auto update' (I gather others have). To update your zune simply go: Options, Sync, [zune name], Check for Zune Device Updates.

This 1.2 release appears to be a stability and performance release only (ie. no overt new features). I've found scrolling through the lists much faster and smoother after the update. This kind of rapid updating to the software is why I selected the Zune over the competitors (and I'll be honest I was close to getting something else).

Team Blog

clock December 17, 2006 13:30 by author philip
The 'founder' of the CRM Team Blog, Ilana Smith, is moving to a new role in Microsoft's Denmark engineering centre (or center if you prefer). Ilana's departure leaves me as the only Australian on the team - but fortunately there are plenty of other foreigners to keep me company.

As Ilana mentioned in her post I'll be taking over her role as the 'PM blog person'. Over the next few weeks I'll be evaluating my approach to the blog. At this stage I have no plans to make any big changes: as I think the work Ilana and Jim have done to date has been outstanding. I am considering some more 'add on' stuff like Channel 9 style videos. This kind of community stuff can be a lot of hard work and the blog is not my 'day job' (if it does go on my goals it won't be #1, 2, 3 or 4!). While I'm pondering such things over the next few weeks feel free to email me suggestions on what stuff you'd like to see (or not see) on the CRM Team Blog.

New Australian Copyright Law FAQ

clock December 6, 2006 11:18 by author philip
Check out this new FAQ covering the new Australian copyright laws. It's good to see that 'time shifting', 'format shifting' and multi-region DVDs will be legal. The time shifting restrictions seem a bit vague (you can keep to watch at a later time but not keep forever).

Spam as Poetry

clock December 4, 2006 12:18 by author philip

I'm really enjoying the latest crop of spam. It seems to be some sort of search engine results mashed together to make a message. Many of them read like like poetry. Here is an example:

A few starter tips are: Have professional pictures taken of your cakes. Anyhow, I got there, met my father and his best friend in her room, the room where my mother died. Last night, my car exploded, I saw it happen from a distance. Always the strange vivid dreams. mix it up a bit go with neutral colors. But I swear, I am not.
